Got a letter from your insurance company?

Many Florida insurers ask for a 4-point inspection on older homes, and the electrical panel is one of the four things they check. If the inspector finds a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger, or fuse panel, a lot of insurers won't write or renew the policy until it's replaced. We replace it, pull the permit, and get it inspected, so you have a permitted, inspected panel to show your insurer.

Federal Pacific (FPE) Stab-Lok panels

Federal Pacific Electric panels with Stab-Lok breakers went into a lot of homes from the 1950s through the 1980s, and they still turn up across Tampa. Independent testing has found that some Stab-Lok breakers can fail to trip during an overload or short circuit, which is the one job a breaker has. That's why home inspectors and insurers flag them.

Full panel replacement

We remove the Federal Pacific panel and breakers and install a new, code-compliant panel with new breakers and a labeled circuit directory, plus AFCI, GFCI, and surge protection where code requires it or you ask for it. It works for any Federal Pacific panel.

Retrofit kit

Where a UL-listed retrofit kit is made for your exact panel, we can replace the panel's interior and breakers and keep the existing box in the wall. That can mean less wall repair. Kits don't exist for every panel, and the box and wiring have to be in good shape.

Why we don't just swap breakers

Replacing individual Stab-Lok breakers leaves the original bus bar and box in service, so it doesn't fix the panel as a whole. We look at the panel, the wiring, and what you plan to add, then recommend a replacement or a retrofit.

Zinsco and Sylvania panels

Zinsco panels, also sold under the Sylvania name, were common in homes from the 1950s through the 1970s. Their breakers can fail to trip during an overload, and over time a breaker can overheat and fuse to the bus bar, which means it can no longer cut power to that circuit.

Full panel replacement

We remove the Zinsco panel and breakers and install a new, code-compliant panel with new breakers and a labeled circuit directory. Melted or damaged bus bars are common in these panels, so replacement is usually the right call.

Retrofit kit

Where a UL-listed retrofit kit is made for your specific Zinsco panel and the box is in good condition, we can replace the interior and breakers and keep the box in the wall. We check the panel first and recommend the option that fits.

How to tell what you have

  • Federal Pacific: the door or label says "Federal Pacific Electric" or "FPE," and the breakers say "Stab-Lok."
  • Zinsco: the label says "Zinsco" or "Sylvania," and the breakers are often brightly colored (blue, red, green).
  • Fuse box: screw-in fuses instead of breakers.

Not sure? Call (813) 833-9854 and we can check it on a service call. If you also need more power, we can combine the job with a service upgrade.

Other signs a panel needs replacing

  • Breakers that trip often or feel warm
  • Scorch marks or a burning smell (call right away)
  • Rust or corrosion inside the panel
  • No open spaces left for new circuits
  • Planning an EV charger, pool, addition, or remodel

We work throughout Tampa, including South Tampa, Hyde Park, Davis Islands, Westchase, Odessa, and Lutz.

Panel Replacement FAQs

How much does panel replacement cost in Tampa?

It depends on the panel size, whether the meter or service also needs replacing, and what's needed to meet current code. We give you a written estimate after looking at your setup.

Will my insurance company require a new panel?

If you have a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger, or fuse panel, many insurers will. Others may flag panels that show rust, damage, or double-tapped breakers during a 4-point inspection.

How long will my power be off?

For most homes, power is off for part of one day while the new panel is installed and connected. We'll give you the timeline before we start.

How do I know if I have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?

Look at the panel door or label. Federal Pacific panels say Federal Pacific Electric or FPE, and the breakers say Stab-Lok. Zinsco panels say Zinsco or Sylvania, and the breakers are often brightly colored. If you're not sure, we can check it on a service call.

Can I just replace the Stab-Lok breakers?

We don't recommend it. New breakers still sit on the original bus bar and box, so the panel as a whole isn't fixed. The real fix is a full panel replacement or, where one exists for your panel, a UL-listed retrofit kit.

Will replacing my panel help with my homeowners insurance?

If your insurer flagged a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger, or fuse panel on a 4-point inspection, replacing it is usually what they're asking for. When we finish, you have a permitted, inspected panel to show them. Check with your insurer for their exact requirements.
