What a service upgrade includes

A typical residential service upgrade includes a new meter base, a new main panel sized for the home (often 200 amps), new service entrance conductors, updated grounding and bonding, and coordination with the utility (usually TECO) to disconnect and reconnect power. We do a load calculation first so the new service is sized for what you have now and what you plan to add.

We work throughout Tampa, including South Tampa, Hyde Park, Davis Islands, Westchase, Odessa, and Lutz.

When a service upgrade makes sense

Service upgrades are often needed when a property is adding new loads, renovating, installing EV charging, replacing older electrical infrastructure, or simply outgrowing the capacity of the existing service. In Tampa and surrounding areas, that can mean preparing older buildings for modern kitchens, HVAC equipment, lighting upgrades, and higher overall demand.

X Electric approaches service upgrades with a focus on planning, clean installation, and code-compliant work that supports the long-term needs of the building. For owners and property managers, that means less guesswork and a stronger foundation for future projects.

Service Upgrades FAQs

How do I know if I need a service upgrade?

Common signs are breakers that trip when several things run at once, a panel with no open spaces, dimming lights when the AC kicks on, or plans to add an EV charger, pool, addition, or major appliance.

How long does a service upgrade take?

The installation itself usually takes a day, with power off for part of it. Total timing depends on permitting, inspection, and when the utility can reconnect.

Do I need a 200-amp service for an EV charger?

Not always. Some 100-amp and 150-amp homes can support a charger, especially with a load-managed setup. We check your existing loads before recommending an upgrade.
