What it protects

Modern homes are full of electronics: AC and heat pump controls, refrigerators, washers, smart TVs, routers, EV chargers, and pool and spa equipment. All of them have circuit boards that surges can damage, sometimes all at once and sometimes a little at a time.

What it doesn't do

Nothing fully protects against a direct lightning strike to your home. A whole-home surge protector reduces damage from the much more common surges that come in through the power lines. For sensitive electronics, we still recommend good plug-in surge strips as a second layer.

When code requires it

The current National Electrical Code (2020 and later), used in Florida, requires surge protection when a home's electrical service is installed or replaced. If you're getting a panel replacement or service upgrade, it's part of the job.

Good times to add it

  • Before hurricane and summer storm season
  • With a panel replacement or service upgrade
  • When you add an EV charger, new AC, or pool equipment
  • After a storm damaged appliances or electronics

Surge protection FAQs

Do I need whole-home surge protection in Tampa?

It's one of the best upgrades for a Tampa home. The area gets frequent lightning, and surges from storms and utility switching can damage AC controls, appliances, and electronics. A surge protector at the panel protects everything in the house at once.

Will it protect my home from a direct lightning strike?

No device fully protects against a direct strike. A whole-home surge protector reduces damage from the much more common surges that come in through the power lines. Plug-in surge strips add a second layer for sensitive electronics.

Can it be added to my existing panel?

Usually, yes. It mounts at or next to your existing panel. If the panel is a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other outdated type, we'll recommend replacing the panel first.

Is surge protection required by code?

The current National Electrical Code (2020 and later), used in Florida, requires surge protection when a home's electrical service is installed or replaced, so it's included with panel replacements and service upgrades.
